Anne Marie Filipiak, age 101, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2021, in Houston, Texas, surrounded by her family. She was born on November 30, 1919, in Ford City, Pennsylvania, to Michael and Mary (Gaspar) Sedlak. She lived most of her life in Rossford, Ohio. She was a gymnast, high school basketball player and the only freshman girl to become homecoming queen. She built Jeeps during the Second World War. She married Chester S. Filipiak on February 7, 1942, and he passed away May 29, 1996.
Anne was active at her church, the former SS. Cyril and Methodius (now All Saints). You couldn’t find a better cook and baker. For 27 years, Anne cooked Monday through Friday for the SS. Cyril school children, baking 30-plus loaves of bread each day for the children’s lunch. She would get up at 4 a.m., to start the raising of the bread before her kitchen crew would arrive. She also enjoyed being in charge and cooking in the “kitchen” for all the festival dinners during which she and her crew had a lot of laughs. She enjoyed it! Every Christmas and Easter she and her crew would bake Slovak cookies, nut rolls, tea rings, etc. for the bake sales at the church. She donated her time for the funeral brunches, never charging a family anything but for the meat.
She had an interesting life. As an infant she and her father and mother traveled to Rabol, Czechoslovakia, where her father owned stables and a hotel, and where they put on puppet shows. She learned to read, speak and write Slovak. When they returned to the states, they settled in Rossford. Anne did gymnastics at the Sokol Club, learned to be a pool shark and was hard to beat at horseshoes.
Anne was a football fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Detroit Tigers.
Anne will be greatly missed by her children, David (Sharon) Filipiak, Michael Filipiak and Martin (Pat) Filipiak; grandchildren, David, Craig, Heather (Josh), Jessica and Amanda; greatgrandchildren, Hayden, Paige, Kacie, Tabitha, Cain and Greyson, and many nephews and nieces.
Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Chet; parents, Michael and Mary; sisters, Mary Ann (Ralph) Meis and infant son, Valaria, and baby brother, Michael, and all her brother and sisters-in-laws.
A special thank you to Father Anthony Recker, Carolyn Davenport, godchild Jackie Limes, Judy Sikorski, Tina Suiter and family, Katie, Dan, Hannah and Molly Tutor, and Louise Vavrik, for all their love and support through the years.
