Richard Norman Caro, 80, Perrysburg, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, May 12, 2023. He was born in Toledo, on August 20, 1942, to Samuel Vincent and Betty Virginia (Forshey) Caro.

Richard grew up in Toledo and was a graduate of Waite High School Class of 1960, then continued his education in law enforcement at the University of Toledo. He met and married Lois Pollick on June 27, 1964, his true love of 58 years. Richard and Lois began building their life together on Maryland Avenue in Toledo and bought their first home on Oak Street in Rossford, where they raised their three children and resided for 37 years. After retirement, Richard and Lois moved to their current home in Perrysburg.

In 1967, Richard followed his passion for law enforcement as he joined the Rossford Police Department as a patrolman. Under the leadership of Chief Matt Vedra, he was promoted to sergeant, and he led the police department from 1991 to 1999, as chief of police. While chief, he was part of expanding the police presence throughout the city as an early adapter of community policing. Over the years, he built strong relationships with the residents of Rossford and was extremely proud of the city. He received many awards, including: the Black Swamp Humanitarian Award and recognition from U.S. Department of Justice FBI, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Attorney General Betty Montgomery.

In addition to working on the police department, he worked as a conductor for Conrail Railroad.

Richard was a huge sports fan. In his early years he played on a competitive baseball team, which was coached by his father. He was a huge spectator of Ohio State football and Detroit Tigers, Lions and Red Wings, and did his best to not miss a game. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing, and was an avid boater on the Maumee River and across the Great Lakes. He continued his love for water and nature by spending time with family at Lake Gage.

Family was very important

to Richard. His love and pride of his seven grandchildren was displayed every time he attended their sporting events, school and church programs. He received great satisfaction and happiness from lending a hand to family members, which was evident as he made a priority to drop everything when someone needed assistance. He was relied on for his knowledge to fix anything.

Richard was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mabel and John Sayen, Carl A. Forshey; parents, Samuel Caro and Betty (Caro) Siemieracki; parents-in-law, Mike and Helen Pollick, and brother-in-law, Raymond Pollick.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lois Ann (Pollick); sisters, Carol (William) Meader and Nancy (Thomas) Koepfler; brother, Robert (Linda) Caro; son, Scott (Kevin) Caro; daughters, Sharon (Bradley) LaVoy and Shelly (Tony) Reiser; grandchildren, Matthew (Eleese) LaVoy, Miranda LaVoy, Michael LaVoy, Justine Metroff, Guiliana Reiser, Quentin Reiser and Nicholas Caro, and many nieces, nephews and great friends.

The family would like to share a special thanks and gratitude to Dr. Salvador E. Peron, for always being available and providing wonderful care and support.

Family and friends were received at Sujkowski-Walker Funeral Home, 830 Lime City Road, Rossford, on Wednesday, May 17, from 2 to 7 p.m., and Thursday, May 18, at 10 a.m., with a funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Ft. Meigs Union Cemetery.
