The most common hawk noticed along roadsides from coast to coast is the Red-tailed Hawk. “This impressive raptor stands 19 inches high and has a wingspan of just over four feet,” Rossford resident Bill Heban. A member of the “buteo” family of hawks with relatively broad wings and short tails, the Red-tailed is a bird of open country. “Look for it perched on telephone poles, light posts, road signs and edges of trees,” he advised. Their plumage varies widely from east to west. On most eastern birds, the tail is reddish above and whitish below, with the color showing through in overhead flight. The eastern plumage is known for the dark belly-band of streaks. “This is an older image of a bird being rehabilitated from injury at Nature’s Nursery in Whitehouse,” Mr. Heban explained. “I was fortunate to attend a fund-raising photography event at their property, and I would encourage anyone to support their continuing work to save and care for native wildlife in our area.”
