As of presstime August 10, the following numbers were released by the Wood County Health Department:

•13,484 cases since March 2020–an increase of 84 since last week, which is the largest weekly increase since May 10.

In the past two weeks, there were 49 active cases in Perrysburg, 27 in Bowling Green, six in Northwood, six in Weston and five in Millbury.

•230 deaths (one more than last week) and 661 hospitalizations since March 2020 (four more than last week).

According to the Ohio Department of Health, 5,863,957 Ohioans have received at least the first round of the COVID-19 vaccine, which equals 50.17 percent of the entire population.

However, 58.63 percent of Ohioans age 12 and older have been vaccinated, and 61.06 percent of Ohioans age 18 and older have been vaccinated.

In Wood County, 70,599 people, or 53.97 percent of the population, have been vaccinated with at least the first dose.

In Lucas County, there have been 211,398 people, or 49.35 percent, vaccinated with at least the first dose.

According to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, the Delta variant is now the dominant strain of COVID-19 in Ohio.

In May, less than 1 percent of lab sequenced cases were identified as the Delta variant. The most recent data from July 4 to 17 show that 86.4 percent of lab sequenced cases were the Delta variant.

For those who get infected with the Delta variant, the governor said, experts believe they may have a higher viral load than those who are infected with other strains.

“It is much more contagious than any version of COVID-19 that we have encountered and remains exceedingly dangerous to those who are not vaccinated,” he added.

Of the total hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients since January 1, there were 18,367 individuals not fully vaccinated. Just 295 patients had received the vaccine, he noted.
