Visitors to many area parks or the small lakes in Ohio and Michigan this summer have a good chance of seeing the native water lily in bloom.

Nymphaea odorata has many common names–from white water lily, fragrant water lily and American water lily to beaver root.

“Revealed by its platterlike floating leaves and blooms, it grows in water up to six to seven feet deep, rooted in mucky or silty sediments…
