How to make real hot chocolate

Nothing beats sipping a hot, soothing beverage after a day of choosing the perfect Christmas tree or lobbing snowballs in the backyard. Teas, hot toddies, coffees and mulled ciders certainly can fit the bill, but a mug of rich hot chocolate is a holiday season staple.

Donations accepted through Dec. 14

office, 130 Louisiana Avenue, Perrysburg is collecting winter accessories for distribution to area families in need this holiday season. Residents are invited to hang new mittens, gloves, scarves or hats on the tree. As a special incentive, anyone who donates can enter to win a $100 gift certificate to Rose and Thistle Pub and Restaurant in downtown Perrysburg. The Journal also is accepting donations of pet food placed under the tree for the Wood County Humane Society.

Rossford mayor and council members sworn in at December 4 meeting

Rossford city council held an organizational meeting, swearing in two new council members, one incumbent and the mayor to their four-year terms on December 4. Mayor Neil MacKinnon III, who ran unopposed, was the first to be sworn in followed by incumbent Larry Oberdorf and newcomers Rachel Tinney and Zachary Owen.

Unveiling of Santa’s sleigh set for Dec. 16

Santa will visit the Rossford United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 16, from 2 to 4 p.m., along with Mrs. Claus and some of his elves. The visit will celebrate the unveiling of an antique sleigh for Santa. The sleigh has been hidden for more than a year in anticipation of this big event.

Twp. trustees move forward with administration building, current facility plans

Plans for a new administration building are back on track with approval by the Perrysburg Township trustees to seek requests for qualifications. At the December 6 meeting, the trustees gave the green light to Administrator Jon Eckel to seek RFQs from area firms for designbuild services for construction of the approximately 9,000-square-foot singlestory structure.

Perrysburg Twp. fire dept earns hazmat three status

At the November 6 meeting, the Perrysburg Township trustees learned that the fire department has been recognized as a class three hazmat team by the Ohio Department of Public Safety. “We are the first and only one in Wood County,” said Fire Chief Tom Brice, adding, “That is a pretty big deal for Perrysburg Township.” The chief said the department was considered for class two, but he believes they lack personnel and “we only applied for type three.” According to the Ohio Response System, class three is “an organized public safety hazmat/WMD response team with at least 10 members trained to the hazmat technician level and which meets the specific HM-TAC criteria for being certified as a type three team.

Bulldogs defeat Panthers for season’s first win, 70-59

Rossford overcame a 10-point deficit and then rolled to a 70-59 win over the Maumee Panthers for the team’s first win of the season. In a game that opened with a fast-paced first quarter, the Bulldogs relied on the outside shooting of Parker Theobalds to keep pace with the Panthers.

Children’s Wonderland opens December 8

Children’s Wonderland opens Friday, December 8, at Sylvania Tam-O-Shanter, 7060 Sylvania Avenue. An area tradition for more than 50 years, the event features dozens of classic exhibits, train rides and pictures with Santa. Golf outing raises $24k for MS Society

The Mike Burkett Memorial Golf Outing raised a total of $24,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) this year. Hosted by Burkett Restaurant Equipment and Supplies, the event has been run as a memorial fund-raiser since 2021 when the company’s founder, Mike Burkett, passed away after a 34-year battle with multiple sclerosis (MS).
