James D. Richards Sr.
James D. Richards Sr., age 75 of Rossford, unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2018. Jim was a Rossford native who gave leadership and tireless work to the Rossford community, his church, and professional career as well as being deeply committed to his family, friends and those in need. Jim’s professional career included editing and publishing the old Country and Town Newspaper, staff writer for the Toledo Blade, and the first layman to serve as communications director of the Catholic Diocese of Toledo, a post he held for nearly two decades. He was also director of the Willis B. Boyer Museum Ship, and with his son, Jim, operated the Richards Beverage Center. His community service included time as a Rossford firefighter, 12 years as a member of the Rossford Public Library Board of Trustees and 19 years on Rossford City Council, including two terms as council president. He also served as Rossford’s representative on Toledo Area Transit Authority Board and Wood County Committee of Aging. Jim was an active member of Rossford’s All Saints Catholic Church. He wrote for the parish newsletter, served in fundraising and varies parish programs and was past president of the St. Vincent de Paul Conference assisting persons in financial crisis. His memberships include Holy Cross Council of the Knights of Columbus. Jim has many honors including Distinguished Alumni of Rossford High School. Surviving Jim is his wife of 54 years, Barbara Richards; children, James Jr., Kathleen Walsh (William), Christine Swanson (Steve), Michelle Richards (Ross), Doug, and Shannon Richards (Damian); grandchildren, Tabitha Allen, Justin and James Richards, Elizabeth and Alexandra Coronado, Marlena Ainslie, Sophia Swanson, Katelyn and Michael Sharlow, Kelly, Liam, and Jack Walsh; greatgrandchildren, James Allen, Jaxon, Levi and Benjamin Johnson, Brody Ainslie, Daniel and David Richards; sister, Maureen (Ric) Millen, and sister-in-law, Pat Richards. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irving and Margaret Richards, and brothers, Irving and John Richards. Family and friends visited at the Sujkowski Funeral Home of Rossford, 830 Lime City Road, on Sunday, June 3. A Mass of Christian Burial took place on Monday, June 4, at All Saints Catholic Church, 628 Lime City Road. Interment was in Ft. Meigs Cemetery in Perrysburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Jim’s honor given to Helping Hands of St. Louis or All Saints Catholic Church.
