Fragility fractures common in ‘season of falls’
As another long northwest Ohio winter arrives, slick and icy conditions will prevail at some point, putting area residents at increased risk of slip-and-fall accidents.
For people with strong, healthy bones, a tumble usually just results in a bruised ego—and potentially, a sore backside—but for anyone predisposed to “fragility fractures,” this common mishap can be debilitating or even lifethreatening.
Jason Smith, DO, a Mercy Health primary care sports medicine physician, cautions, “As we move out of the season of fall, we move into the ‘season of falls,’ which can be a dangerous time for people with low bone density.”
