Wenonah G. Flaherty

Wenonah G. Flaherty, 96, of Toledo, passed away Monday, February 5, 2018. She was born December 4, 1921, in Bowling Green, Kentucky. She was the third of seven girls born to Judge William L. and Mayme Elizabeth (Woodring) Gonterman. Wenonah graduated from Munfordville High School and married her high school sweetheart, Buel Tolbert Reynolds. They had one daughter, Sherron Lee, in 1940. B.T. was a pilot in the Army Air Corps and died in a crash in 1944. Nona worked at the Vul T Aircraft Plant in Louisville during WWII. She married Norbert Peters in 1945. He was from Green Bay, Wisconsin, and this is where she developed her love for the Packers. They moved to Toledo in 1955. She was once again widowed. Nona graduated from the University of Toledo, started her graduate studies and also started her teaching career at this time. She taught at St. Clements, Gunckle and finished her career at Riverside School. In 1980, she retired and moved to Florida. She married Matthias Flaherty, and they traveled and cruised extensively. Nona was an avid golfer and won many awards. Her hobbies include gardening, piano and a love of poetry. Her fondness for poetry led her to doing many readings of poetry for different groups. One of her finest achievements was being named Kentucky Colonel. She was an amazing woman! She belonged to Bay View Yacht Club, Sweet Adelines, Women of the Moose, Loyal Order of Eagles and VFW. She is survived by her daughter, Sherron and Donald (Toby) Ward; sisters, Mary Lynn Jensen and Phyllis Clark; grandchildren, Michael (MaryAnn) Jan, Jeffrey Jan, Bradley (Jan Pipes) Jan, Gregory (Angie) Jan, Rebecca (Ron) Dudley, and Jennifer (Steve) Chafins, and many great- and great-greatgrandchildren.
