Frederick F. “Fred” Abair, 92, of Lost Peninsula, Michigan, died peacefully Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at Elizabeth Scott Assisted Living, with his loving family by his side. He was the husband, of 65 years, to the late Bernadine M. “Bernie” Abair, who passed just five months ago. He was born on April 25, 1925, to the late Lucian and Beatrice (Tremmel) Abair. Fred was a proud World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW. Fred also was a civil engineer and retired from the Monroe County Road Commission when he was 62 years old. He was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church. Prayers were reverently said before and after each meal, up until the day he died. Fred’s strong faith served as an example to all. He enjoyed flying his planes, driving his motorcycles, fishing, sailing, camping, family vacations, Detroit Tiger baseball and just putzing around in his backyard shop. All who knew him knew it was “Fred’s way or no way!” and “measure twice, cut once.” He loved to end the day by watching the sunset on his front porch. Fred is survived by his two daughters, Mary Pat (Hal) White of Erie, Michigan, and Beth (Bob) Sugg of Maumee, Ohio; two grandsons, Ryan (Christine) White of Athens, Georgia, and Justin (Kelly) White of Liverpool, New York, and three great-grandchildren, Charles (4), Tessa (2) and Evelyn (8 months) of Liverpool, New York. Fred was the oldest of eight. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Bill and John “Jackie,” and two sisters, Sister Angelita Abair and Eleanor Brainard, and survived by sister, Joan Valentine of Michigan, and brother, Larry Abair of California. Fred especially loved family meals with all of the people mentioned above, and if it included a Manhattan, his homemade fried perch and mom’s pie, all the better! Visitation was held Sunday, March 4, at David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, 5300 N. Summit Street, Toledo. Funeral Mass was Monday, March 5, at St. John’s Catholic Church, 5153 N. Summit Street, Toledo, Father David Cirata, celebrant. Military honors were provided by the Lucas County Burial Corps.
