ODOT, Ohio Turnpike ready for winter amid record warmth

The calendar may indicate snowflakes should be flying, but in typical northwest Ohio fashion, the weather doesn’t always align with the season. And so it was on November 10 when the Ohio Department of Transportation conducted its annual equipment inspection to ensure readiness for the winter weather ahead.

Although the temperature soared into the upper 70s that day, snow and ice crews at the Lucas County garage in Maumee and throughout northwest Ohio spent the day preparing for the arctic chill and the precipitation it brings.

Ed Boyle, ODOT transportation manager at the garage, pointed out that this year’s preparations extend well beyond equipment and supplies. To prevent the onset and spread of COVID-19, personnel have been split into two shifts, he explained.
