Glass: The perfect recyclable
Despite strong local markets for recycled glass, there is a shortage, including right here in Perrysburg, home of Owens-Illinois, one of the world’s largest producers of glass containers.
The shortage is a problem, said Jim Nordmeyer, vice president of sustainability for O-I.
“Glass is the perfect recycled material,” he explained. “It can be recycled over and over, moving from curb to shelf within 30 days. Also, recycling glass rather than making it from raw materials uses far less energy and creates more jobs.”
For an environmentally challenged planet, using less energy is the mandate, he said: make a glass bottle once and recycle it an infinite number of times for the least negative impact on the environment.
