First Solar becomes largest photovoltaic module manufacturer in Western hemisphere
On October 24, production started at First Solar Inc.’s gigantic new photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing facility in Lake Township.
The company continues to operate its flagship factory in Perrysburg Township, and is scaling up its total annualized production capacity in the United States to 1.9 gigawatts (GWDC).
First Solar’s expanded manufacturing footprint in the United States, which represents more than $1 billion in cumulative investment and about 500 new jobs, makes it the largest solar manufacturer in America and the Western hemisphere, according to a company press release.
The Lake Township facility, at the corner of State Route 795 and Tracy Road, produces Series 6 module technology.
Designed and developed at the company’s research and development centers in Ohio and California, the module is produced in just 3.5 hours using sophisticated, fully-integrated manufacturing processes.
