David Leigh Root

David Leigh Root, formerly of the Toledo area, passed away peacefully with his family by his side January 11, 2018, in McLaren Hospice of Little Traverse Bay.He was born August 14, 1950, in Toledo, to Robert and Mary Jo Root. After graduating from St. Francis de Sales High School, Dave went on to Hillsdale College where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and graduated in 1972 with a B.A. in business administration. Dave met his wife Kay Fuhrman during his Hillsdale years and after graduation they married and moved to the Toledo area where they had two children, Whitney Root and James “Jay” Root. Upon return to his hometown, Dave joined the family business, Root Outdoor Advertising, and in 1978, he became president and CEO and grew the business until they sold it in 2000. Dave was enthusiastic about his community and provided philanthropic support by sponsoring many events and donating billboard space to non-profits. As a community leader, he made strides in the redevelopment of the Historic Warehouse District in downtown Toledo. Dave’s conceptual drawings and ideas were the key for bringing new business to the “Huron Street Village.” He also served on several boards, locally and nationally, including being a founding board member of Black Swamp Conservancy and the Victory Center. In 1997, the University of Toledo dedicated the bridge on campus spanning the Ottawa River, the David Leigh Root Bridge, and it was rededicated in 2016 after reconstruction. Following the sale of their business, Dave and his family moved to their northern Michigan home in Harbor Springs where he pursued his hobbies and love of the outdoors. Dave is survived by his wife Kay, his daughter, Whitney, and his father, Robert Root. He was predeceased by his son, Jay; his mother, Mary Jo; his brother, Ronald and his sister, Deborah Root. Services will be private. Arrangements are being made by Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Black Swamp Conservancy, P.O. Box 332, Perrysburg, OH 43552-0332; Victory Center, 5532 West Central Avenue, Ste B, Toledo, OH 43615; or McLaren Hospice of Little Traverse Bay, 416 Connable Avenue, Ste 3, Petoskey, MI 49770.
