‘Rolling Mills’ name chosen for East Toledo Metropark
After researching the history of the metroparks land in east Toledo’s marina district, the Toledo Metroparks board settled on the name Rolling Mills. Shannon Hughes, manager of park programming and interpretation, explained that the name Rolling Mills is derived from the Maumee Rolling Mills Company that once inhabited the site. East Toledo was settled in 1807 by Peter Navarre and his family.
Development faced challenges in part because of the Great Black Swamp, but also due to the decision to construct a canal on the other side of the river. “The first business on the east side was a saw mill in 1848,” Ms. Hughes said, adding that by the 1860s iron and oil were the major industries.
