A Thanksgiving tradition

Point Place’s Kielbasa Bowl honored on 50th anniversary
The Kielbasa Bowl in Point Place celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. It was started in 1967 by Coach Bobby Recker and Coach Bernie Dziengelewski as a tackle pick-up football game.

Coach Recker started St. Francis football in 1955 and is a City League Hall of Fame inductee.

Coach Dziengelewski was a beloved coach of nearly every sport at St. John’s Point Place for many years.

In the early days of the Kielbasa Bowl, it is believed that the game happened after the Shoe Bowl, as an outlet for Point Place football talent. The Old Newsboys’ Shoe Bowl was played on Thanksgiving morning from 1966 through 1990 at the Glass Bowl.
