Village sets up Safe Zone for transactions
Residents worried about conducting Internet or other transactions, now have a safe place to do business. The Village of Holland has established a Safe Exchange Zone in the parking lot at the police department, 1245 Clarion Avenue. The idea came from a resident seeking a safe location to meet someone regarding a Craig’s list purchase.
To perform a transaction, users pull into the designated spaces, painted bright orange. A surveillance camera monitors the exchange, explained Mayor Mike Yunker.
He reminds those using the service to follow rules, which are posted on a fence in front of the spaces. The rules prohibit weapons, drugs and drug paraphernalia transactions, and remind residents that the police can not act as an official witness, nor can they provide legal advice. “They will not settle disputes related to the transactions,” added the mayor.
