New limits on curbside recycling challenged by village, county
New restrictions on the list of items that Holland residents may toss in their curbside recycling may face a legal challenge from village council.
Holland Mayor Mike Yunker is working with Jim Shaw, director of the Lucas County solid waste management district, to resolve the issue.
Stevens Disposal, the village’s new trash/recycling contractor, announced as of November 2, it would no longer accept glass.
Also, the only plastic items that can be recycled are #1 and #2, which primarily are plastic jugs and bottles. Plastics #3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are not accepted.
“It caught us off guard–we were a little surprised,”the mayor said.
The village’s contract with Stevens was awarded through Lucas County and started September 1.
