‘Metroparks’ most ambitious project’
With Howard Marsh park taking shape in northeast Lucas County, officials from the Metroparks of the Toledo Area are closing in on their goal of having a metropark within five miles of every county resident.
The 1,000-acre site in Jerusalem Township, just west of Metzger’s Marsh marks the 16th park to join the metroparks system.
It was purchased for $6 million in 2008 using $3 million from the Ohio Division of Wildlife and $1.8 million from the Clean Ohio Fund. The metroparks’ land acquisition fund covered the remaining $1.2 million. At the time, it was the district’s single largest land purchase.
Plans to return the property to wetlands began shortly after it was acquired with funding assistance from Ducks Unlimited.
