CECILE AYERS
Cecile L. Ayers, 84, died Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at The Toledo Hospital. She was born March 20, 1926, to Joseph and Sarah (Ray) Henderson in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was a member at Bay View Golf Course, where she also volunteered for five years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, and supporting and attending their sporting and school events. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Lewis “Frank” Ayers; children, Danny (Joyce) Ayers, Pam (Terry) Sullivan, Nancy (Steve) Haynes and Donny (Misty) Ayers; grandchildren, Rick, Steve, Tracy, Jeffrey, Amy, Jason, Steven, Brooke, Caitlin, John and James, and great-grandchildren, Brittany, Brandon, Delaney, Shyler, Shaylin and Shevy. Funeral services were held Monday, August 23, in the Newcomer Funeral Home, with her son, Assistant Pastor Donny Ayers officiating. Interment was in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.




ALAN “AJ” SIEK

Alan “AJ” Siek, 71, of Point/Shoreland Community, died Saturday, August 21, 2010, in The Toledo Hospital. He was born in Toledo, in 1938, to Larry and Mercedes (Momminee) Siek. He worked as a systems engineer for IBM, retiring in 1992 after 36 years of employment. He was a founding member and past commodore of North Cape Yacht Club; a ham radio operator at the age of 14 with the call numbers W8OKO, and an avid sail boat racer. He and his wife, Hilma, left North Cape Yacht Club and the shelter of the Great Lakes in 1994 to fulfill his dream of living in the Caribbean. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Hilma (Brown) Siek; children, Cathy (Tom) Boller, Marti (Chuck) Turney, and Peter (Andrea) Siek; grandchildren, Nick, Jamie, Sam, Kristi, Stephanie, Gretchen, Matt, and Jason; sisters, Pat Tuller and Mary Jo (Allen) Davis. A memorial service was held Wednesday, August 25, at the North Cape Yacht Club, LaSalle, Michigan. Arrangements were made by the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home. BARBARA ZOLTANSKI

Barbara Finsel Zoltanski died Thursday, August 20, 2010. She was born in Fostoria, Ohio, in 1929, to Ralph and Helen (Hoffbauer) Finsel. She received her bachelor’s degree in teaching in 1952, from St. Mary of the Springs College for Women, in Columbus. She taught first grade in one of the last remaining four-room schoolhouses in rural Ohio. Throughout the course of her life, Mrs. Zoltanski honored her family heritage of service through international and local concerns. She reached beyond her community to raise awareness and generate funds to support special needs children in developing countries, with a particular interest in Guatemala. She involved her local community to respond to the plight of the Chernobyl disaster, working to supply safe food to families. She promoted cultural exchange that fostered understanding and peace, welcoming international students and Asian educators to reside in her family home. On a local level, her efforts resulted in the first federally-funded hot lunch program at her community elementary school, the establishment of publicly provided transportation for faith-based schools in Lucas County, and the preservation of Maumee Valley historic structures. She was concerned with the needs of Toledo central city children, where she was a volunteer teacher. Mrs. Zoltanski served meals at St. Francis De Sales soup kitchen and drove a door-to-door bread route delivering to families in need. An accomplished pianist, throughout her life with her husband and many children, Mrs. Zoltanski routinely visited the elderly, sick and local nursing homes to play the piano and read poetry. A lifelong student of American history, particularly the Civil War and the Maumee River Valley, Mrs. Zoltanski shared her knowledge via a weekly newspaper column in the Maumee Herald. Trail Lore chronicled Ohio history and documented stories of local residents and their place in regional events. Mrs. Zoltanski was affiliated with the Ohio Dominican University Alumni Association, the League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Women, where she was president of the investment group, Foundation for Life, Heartbeat of Toledo and the Auxiliary of the Little Sisters of the Poor. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Attorney Edward Zoltanski; children, Teresa Zoltanski, Esq., Cecilia Zoltanski Ross, Mary Zoltanski DeWitt, Thomas Edward, Stephen John, Peter Joseph, Helen Zoltanski, Monica Zoltanski, Esq., Joan Zoltanski Karabogias, M.D.; grandchildren, and siblings, Mildred Naderer, Mary Gabel, Charles Finsel. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Francis, and her siblings, Ursula Maciejewski, Catherine Knopp and Norman Finsel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today, August 26, at 11 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 104 West Broadway Street, Maumee. Arrangements were made by the Sujkowski Funeral Home of Rossford. ROBERT BADMAN

Robert R. “The Reverend” Badman, 66, died unexpectedly on Saturday, August 14, 2010. He resided in the Point Place/Shoreland area all of his life. He enjoyed playing the piano, sailing, ice boating, Ohio State Football, and spending time with family and friends. Mr. Badman was a 1962 graduate of Woodward High School. He served in the Army National Guard of Ohio-583rd Military Police Co. He was a lifetime member of the Toledo Ice Yacht Club and a member of Jolly Roger Sailing Club for 50 years. He worked for many years at Jones Transfer in Toledo and, before retiring, was a realtor with Noral Realty Company. Mr. Badman is survived by his wife of 42 years, Linda (Mercurio) Badman; sons, Bob (Kathy) Jr., Tim and Bryan; daughter, Tammy; grandchildren, Alexis, Brock, Cameron and Blake; nieces and nephews, John, Jeff, Amy, Jamie, Tanya, James, Michael, Sharon, Sherry and Shelly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Elizabeth “Betty” (Heller) Badman, and brother, Denny. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 19, at Messiah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. ANN PALENSKE

Ann D. (Bella) Palenske, 80, of the Point and Shoreland community, died Tuesday, August 17, 2010, in her home. She was born to Joseph and Lizzebet Bella on December 19, 1929, in Northwood, Ohio. She was the youngest of eight children born to the Hungarian immigrants. Ms. Palenske has resided in Shoreland for the past 55 years. She retired as an LPN from the former Riverside Hospital in 1991. Prior to that, she had worked at LOF and Toledo Scale. She is a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, enjoyed crafting, making costumes for the cement geese and attending craft shows. She also had attended NWOLPN, was a member of the Point Place Quilters, North Toledo Arrow Club and New Hope Ladies Guild. True to her Hungarian heritage, she enjoyed cooking and baking for all the family birthday parties where she baked her famous carrot cake. She co-started Girl Scouts and made cheerleading outfits for the Shoreland girls in the 1960s. She was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Richard Palenske; daughters, Cathy Mutchler, Deb McDowell, Susan Miller; grandchildren, Lisa (R.J. Wisniewski) McDowell, Vanessa (Jeff) Geiger, Matthew (Kelly) Mutchler, Tara (Eric) Allore, David McDowell, Gregory (Lisa Syroka) Mutchler; great - grandchildren, Josie, Allison, Nick, Lindsay, Jake, Ryan, Madison, Logan and Lukas; sister, Elizabeth McCarthy; sisters-in-law, Margaret Willson and Gertrude Bella, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, Alex, John and Frank; sisters, Helen Bratt and Judy Reynolds, and son-in-law, Jeff Mutchler. JAMES TOPEL SR.

James R. Topel Sr., of the Point Shoreland community, died Sunday, August 15, 2010, in the home of his son, James Jr. in Sterling, Virginia. He was born in Fremont, Ohio, on September 8, 1935, to Carl and Josephine (Stachowiak) Topel. Mr. Topel was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and a past member of St. Joseph Church in Fremont, and the National Guard of Fremont. He worked for more than 30 years before retiring from Jeep Corp., and was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Ohio National Guard. He is survived by his son, James (Anne) Topel Jr. of Sterling, and brother, Carlton Topel of Mason, Ohio. Funeral services were held Friday, August 20, at the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, with Deacon Joe Malenfant officiating. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Fremont. MICHAEL GERRIE
Michael D. “Mike” Gerrie, 65, of Point Place, died Sunday, August 8, 2010, at his home. He was employed by Perstorp as a powerhouse operator, maintenance for the past 34 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He also was in the Air Force Reserve and Ohio National Guard. He enjoyed Nascar auto racing, collections from the Franklin Mint, model cars, boating, and rebuilding vintage carburetors. Mr. Gerrie was a member of Bayview Yacht Club, and owned several commercial properties. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Sandy Gerrie; sons, Charles “Chip” Gerrie, Scott (Tina) Belknap; daughter, Jody (Gary) Comiskey; grandchildren, Jason Belknap and Ashley Kasmierski; brother, Robert Gerrie, and nieces, Kristen Gerrie and Heather Foore. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Violet (Warner) Gerrie. Per Mr. Gerrie’s request, there was no visitation and services were private. A remembrance party will be held Saturday, August 28, at 1 p.m., at Bayview Yacht Club. Arrangements were made by the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home. RANDY MYRICE
Randy R. Myrice, 54, of Point Place, died unexpectedly at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, on Sunday, August 1, 2010. He was born in Toledo, to Clarence and Theresa (Sutter) Myrice on October 18, 1955; both parents preceded him in death. He enjoyed fishing, playing pool, and snowmobiling. He also was an avid fan of the college football teams of The Ohio State and Notre Dame universities. Mr. Myrice is survived by his sons, Joshua (Kathleen), Shane (Susie Printke), and Craig Myrice; grandchildren, Lily, Phillip and Tyler, and sisters, Judy (Tom) McGrail and Joyce (William) Harlett. DONALD SCHAFER SR.
Donald Schafer Sr. died July 25, 2010, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born in Toledo and spent many years living in Point Place. He is survived by his son, Donald Jr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen. It was his wish to donate his body to the University of Toledo Medical College of Ohio.


VIVIAN WESTENDORF
Vivian M. Westendorf, 83, of the Point and Shoreland community, died Friday, July 30, 2010, while at Orchard Villa, under the care of Hospice of Northwest Ohio. She was born on October 4, 1926, to Robert and Mildred (Shinaver) Lee in Oregon, Ohio. She married William Westendorf on June 12, 1948. A homemaker, she belonged to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She enjoyed tending to her flower garden, adopting stray cats and dogs, and special family dinners during the summer with her family around their pool. She and her husband also enjoyed spending time together shopping for antiques. She is survived by her son, Patrick (Gayle) Westendorf, and grandchildren, Jason, Renee and William. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1993. Prayers began Tuesday, August 3, in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Gerald Chmiel officiating. Interment was in St. Ignatius Cemetery. Janice V. Brock, 60, of Toledo, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010, in St. Vincent’ Mercy Medical Center. She was born to Bernard and Evelyn (Nowowiejski) McNary, in Toledo, on September 24, 1949. She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. She enjoyed sewing, nature, tending to her many flower gardens, and cooking for her family. She is survived by her children, Todd Speaker and Tammy (Jon) Zapf; grandchildren, Jamie, Brittanie, Brandon and Brigett; greatgranddaughter, Bethany- Ann, and special cousin, George Newman. Juanita Lee Lewis, 63, of Toledo, died Saturday, July 24, 2010 in Sylvania. She enjoyed embroidery and music as well as having coffee time with her friends. She also supported many veterans groups over the years. She is survived by her sons, Tim (Michelle) Urrutia, Kevin (Elizabeth) Urrutia; grandchildren, Courtney, Cassy, Gabrielle, Sierra, Timothy II and Jack Urrutia; step-father, Ted LaCourse; sisters, Geri (David) Vinson, Clara Gorski, and several nieces and nephews. Mary L. Rudes-Condon, 88, of the Point Shoreland area, died Friday, July 23, 2010. She enjoyed trips to the casinos with friends and playing cards while spending time with her family. She is survived by her children, Constance Szarlip, Corelda (James) White, Doris (Larry) Zawisza, Fred (Teresa) Rudes Jr., Howard (Nancy) Rudes, Hazel Williams and Christine (William) Basden; 27 grandchildren; 36 greatgrandchildren; three greatgreat- grandchildren; brother, Willis (Maybelle) McLane; sister-in-law, Twila McLane and friend, Ralph. HELEN STRIBRNY
Helen Marie Stribrny died July 22, 2010, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. She was born September 6, 1921. A homemaker, she worked for various firms in Toledo. Her favorite pastimes included crafts, needlework, cooking and being around the waters of Point Place. She was a lifetime member of River View Yacht Club, past president and charter member of International Satin Gavel. She is survived by her husband of nearly 71 years, William; son, James; grandchildren, William Jr., Dirk and T.J. of Pennsylvania, Michael of U.S. Army Reserves, Germany, and Stephanie of Kansas City, Missouri; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Bench; many nieces and nephews and in-laws. She was preceded in death by her son, William Jr.; sister, Rosemary VanArsdale, and brother, James Eckenrode. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 7, at noon, at River View Yacht Club in Point Place. Arrangements are being made by the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home. David J. Edwards, of Toledo, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 18, 2010. He was born to Elliot and Wilma (Peterson) Edwards in Toledo, on December 19, 1957. He was a member of the Placer’s Car Club, American Legion Post #110, and Point Place VFW Post 3265. He enjoyed camping and fishing, car shows and his Mustang. Mr. Edwards is survived by his sons, Jeremy (Ashley) Edwards, Sean (Nicole) Edwards; grandchildren, Gage and Alexis; brother, Bill (Debbie); sisters, Sissy, Ruthy (Tim), Barbara (David) and Peggy (Gomer). He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald; sisters, Mary Benjaman and Phillys Edwards. Visitation was held Friday, July 23, in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home. GLEN WINLAND

Glen J. Winland, 90, of Point Place, died Thursday, July 15, 2010, while in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. He was born in Rayland, Ohio, in 1920. He worked for Associated Truck Lines for 30 years, retiring in 1980. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing. Mr. Winland is survived by his son, Raymond (Candy Winland); granddaughter, Sonya Lutz; great-grandson, Hunter; sister, Mae Panepucci, and special friends, Charlotte Fox and Renee Brewer. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard, in 1974. Visitation was held Sunday, July 18, at the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home. Funeral services and interment were private. EUGENE JOSEPH “JOE” BEAUDOIN JR.

Eugene Joseph “Joe” Beaudoin Jr. died Sunday, July 11, 2010, in his home. He was born on December 20, 1947, to Bonnie Jean (Barnhart) and Eugene Beaudoin Sr. in Toledo, and lived in Point Place/North End his entire life. He attended Edgewater Elementary and Point Place Junior High School, then moved to Suder Avenue and attended Whitmer schools. He worked for Midwest Finishing Products, Ottawa Lake, Michigan, until it closed. He had previously worked at Toledo Spring on North Cove and Rolled Alloys in Erie, Michigan. He was an usher at the University of Toledo football and basketball games and special events. He was an avid Rocket fan and Ohio State Football fan. He enjoyed boating, fishing and camping. Mr. Beaudoin was an avid bingo player in Point Place and East Broadway. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marsha; sons, Kevin and Brian; brothers, Dan (Faye) and Greg (Pam); sister, Kathy (Randy) Spohn; father-inlaw, Chester Pfaff, and sisters- in-law, Cindy Pfaff- Baum and Nadine Pfaff. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Larry Pfaff, and mother-inlaw, Sofie (Mazur) Pfaff. Funeral services were held Friday, July 16, in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Van Brussel officiating. Interment was in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Nancy Jo Horn, 60, died Thursday, July 8, 2010, at home. She was born in Toledo, to Billy and Pauline (Bailey) Gullion. She worked for United Airlines for 41 years. She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Robert; daughter, Billie Jo; sisters, Linda (Doug) Sibbersen and Peggy (Philip) LaZette, and grandchild, Briley. JEFFERY BRADEN

Jeffery “Jeff” Alan Braden, 58, of Perrysburg, died Thursday, July 1, 2010, in St. Luke’s Hospital. He was born to John and Josephine (Welty) Braden on July 26, 1951, in Toledo. He was a personnel consultant for Renhill for many years. He also was the owner/operator of the Huron Market. Mr. Braden was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his mother, Josephine “Jo” Braden-Meyer; siblings, Jackie Reno, Joe (Annette) Braden, Patty (Bob) Alexander and Melinda Braden; 12 nieces and nephews; 24 great-nieces and great-nephews, and special friend, Sue Keeling- Old. He was preceded in death by his father, John Braden, in 1965, and brother, Douglas Braden, in 1988. A memorial service to celebrate of Mr. Braden’s life was held Saturday, July 10, at Zoar Lutheran Church, Perrysburg, with the Rev. Ann Marshall officiating. Arrangements were made by the David R. JEFF MATNEY

Jeff Matney, 50 of Point Place, died June 15, 2010, at St. Ann’s. He was born and raised in Toledo, and a life-long resident of Point Place. He was a 1977 graduate of Woodward High School. Mr. Matney enjoyed fishing, horse racing at Race Way Park, spending time at Cullen Park in Point Place watching the ships and other boaters. He also enjoyed music, playing his guitar and spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews. He is survived by his mother, Dolly; brothers, Jerry and Tim; sisters, Kathy and Karen; nieces, Amanda, Ashley and Cierra, and nephew, Bryce. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Matney. The family will be having a private ceremony.

STELLA RAWLINS
Stella M. Rawlins, 103, of the Point/Shoreland community, died Monday, June 28, 2010, in Heatherdowns Care Center. She was born to John and Pauline (Gerber) Heuring in Bellevue, Ohio, in 1907. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She enjoyed crocheting sweaters and sewing outfits for her grandchildren. Ms. Rawlins is survived by her children, Paula (Bob) Pluciniak, Edith (Mel) Flayter, Lloyd (Linda) Rawlins Jr.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Walters, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Rawlins Sr., in 1959; daughter, Marcella Hoskins; two grandchildren, and brothers, Herman and Leonard Heuring. A Scripture service was held Friday, July 2, in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home. Funeral services began in the funeral home on Saturday, July 3, with prayers, before continuing to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for a Funeral Mass, with the Rev. Keith Stripe officiating. OMA GARNER
Oma Garner, 100, of Toledo died Sunday, June 20, 2010. She was born in Coal Creek, Tennessee, in 1909, to William and Sarah (Heatherly) Brown. She enjoyed taking trips to Kentucky to visit family and friends. Ms. Garner is survived by her children, Dorothy Rodgers, Bonnie (Denny) Maze and Leonard (Judy) Garner, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Alice L. Henry, 81, of Toledo, and formerly of Leavittsburg, Ohio, died Monday, June 28, 2010, in Toledo. She was born October 2, 1928, in Lordstown, Ohio, to John and Phyllis Powell-Ferry. She graduated in 1946 from Fowler High School. She married Raymond Henry on April 18, 1953. She was a member of the Leavittsburg Church of the Nazarene. She was a notary public with the State of Ohio for more than 30 years and also worked for three years as a deputy registrar with the State of Ohio Motor Vehicle. She was a past treasurer and member since 1984 of TOPS Leavittsburg Chapter #1353. In her earlier years, she sang and played the guitar in a local band. Ms. Henry enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching NASCAR racing, especially Jeff Gordon, and Jeopardy. She is survived by her daughters, Marjorie (John) Webster of Twinsburg, Ohio, Darlene (Michael) Martin of El Dorado Hills, California, Phyllis Shepherd of Leavittsburg, Debbie (Mark) Stishan of Warren, and Gloria (Gary) Stishan of Champions Gate, Florida; son, Thurman (Amy) Henry of Toledo; 14 grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; sister, Violet Speelman of Pennsylvania, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; brother, Dwight Ferry; sister, Ila Sprankle; half brothers, Alton and Denton Ferry, and son-inlaw, Robert Shepherd. CHARLOTTE MOTTER
Charlotte M. (Schupp) Motter, 86, of Point Place, died Saturday, June 19, 2010, in the Arbors at Waterville. She was born to Lawrence and Florence (Jodway) Schupp in Toledo. She married Leonard Motter on June 21, 1941, in Defiance, Ohio. She worked for 25 years at First National Bank in Point Place as head teller. She was active at Messiah Lutheran Church in Point Place for 80 years; she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and served on the Church Council. She was a volunteer at Riverside Hospital and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She had a passion for sports all of her life; she played softball for 20 years with the old “Driggs Dairy” team as their third baseman. She enjoyed bowling and carried an average of 185 for many years at the Barge Inn while helping to secure many championships for their great sponsor, the David R. Jasin Funeral Home. She was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and of Ernie Harwell (the voice of the Tigers). She and her husband’s favorite song was “The Harbor Lights,” going back to their early days of their marriage and living in Point Place. She is survived by her son, Jim Motter of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Bob, David and Zachary Motter, Michael and Carter Borsos, Alexa and Brandt Winter; niece, Nancy Youngs; nephews; John Griffiths of North Carolina, Larry Griffiths of Florida, and David Schupp of Sylvania. MARY PARTIN-WILLARD
Mary Partin-Willard, 75, of Point Place, died Monday, June 21, 2010, in the Toledo Hospital. She was born in Toledo, in 1934, to Louis and Lillian (Bunker) Tucker. She worked for 25 years as the bar maid for various establishments including the former Gary’s Pub. She was a lifetime member of NTAC. She is survived by her children, Debra (Tom) Koegh, Daniel (Kim) Partin, Donald (Barb) Partin, Diana (Mark) Bauer, Denice (Walt) Wilhoyte, and Dorothy (Everett) Ramsey; 13 grandchildren; 18 greatgrandchildren; brother, Ronald Tucker; sisters, Dorothy Crosby, Cleo Ryan, and Sharon Brighton, and many nieces and nephews. Marilyn J. (Merritt) Vandock, 67, died Friday, June 18, 2010. She was born in Toledo, to Marvin and Betty (Stephenson) Merritt in 1943. She attended Scott High School. She enjoyed country music and line dancing, Christmas, playing cards, reading, traveling, and spending time with her family, especially Saturdays. MARVIN MYERS

Marvin L. Myers, 70, died Monday, June 14, 2010, in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. He was born to George and Pearl (Wheeler) Myers in Toledo. He worked as a carpenter for many years for Schlaghter/Nauman before retiring. He served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Myers was a member of the American Legion Pond Post #99, the North Toledo Arrow Club and enjoyed fishing, golfing and going to casinos with his cousins. He is survived by his daughter, Gina Myers; grandchildren; mother, Pearl Myers; sister, Marlene (Monte) Flemmings, and several cousins. Virginia Elizabeth Mlotzek, 86, of the Point/Shoreland community, died Saturday, June 12, 2010. She was born to Albert and Renie (Ainsworth) Brightman in Toledo. She belonged to the Christian Fellowship Church in Erie, Michigan, for many years. She taught Sunday school and played the organ at church and also held Bible study groups in her home. She also taught ceramics, was treasurer at both St. John the Baptist School and J. Schur School Mothers Clubs and also was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader over the years. She also cooked for the Ursuline Sisters of St. John’s. Ms. Mlotzek is survived by her children, Barbara (Jerry) Owens, Joanne Miller, Patricia (Bill) Wagener, John (Cathy) Mlotzek and James Mlotzek; grandchildren, Joseph (Sandra) Owens, Jeffrey (Joni) Owens, Sandra Owens, Lori (Chris) Tober, Dawn (Jim) Russell, Raymond Miller, Kelly Pendrey, Tracy (Phil) Kowyna, Ronnie (Tommy) Wolfe and Ryan Mlotzek; 16 great-grandchildren; sister- in-law, Janice Brightman, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1979. She also was preceded in death by her granddaughter and her husband, Jenny (Rob) Melton, and brothers, Theodore and Francis Brightman. CHARLES LARGE
Charles J. Large, 80, formerly of Point Place, died Saturday, June 12, 2010. The youngest of 14 children, he was born on November 16, 1929, in Harbor View, Ohio, to Frank and Elsie (Shoemaker) Large. Mr. Large started working at the age of 15 on the lake freighters sailing the Great Lakes. He married Beverly on February 5, 1948. He was employed at Roadway Express then became the vice president and business agent of Teamsters Local 20 Union; he then worked for Ace Hardware as distribution manager until his retirement. He enjoyed traveling, spending time at their cottage at Barton Lake, Indiana, and with his grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Linda (Dave) Swanson, Martha Large, Jeanne Tillman, Mark (Dianne) Large, and Keith (Julie) Large; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly, in 1996, and all of his brothers and sisters. Prayers began in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 15, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Gerald Chmiel officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. JEANNINE GAUTHIER

Jeannine A. Gauthier, 81, of Point Place, died Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Perrysburg Center. She was born in Toledo, to Leo and Irene (Drouillard) Nagel. She sang for many years as a youngster for radio on WSPD for the Uncle Jules radio program during the 1930s and 1940s. She continued singing throughout her years at Central Catholic High School in their operettas. She worked for many years at the Bureau of Unemployment for the State of Ohio then for seven years at Dana Corporation as an employment specialist in the human resource department. She enjoyed reading and gardening. Mrs. Gauthier is survived by her husband of 45 years, John Gauthier; daughters, Mary (Sherry) Wening, Kimberly (Joey) Maros, and Laura Juhasz; brother, Scott (Anne) Nagel, seven nieces and nephews, along with her extended family, Tom and April Hanus and their children, Brandon, Colton and Drew. LUCILLE “LU” EGAN

Lucille M. “Lu” Egan died Sunday, June 13, 2010. at the Toledo Hospital. She was born on September 2, 1925, to Joseph and Marie (Majewski) Aumiller in Toledo. She married William Egan on February 15, after dating for only two weeks. She was homemaker who enjoyed cooking and baking, and watching her afternoon “stories” on television. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, William Egan Sr.; children, Dinny (Jerry) Stopera, Dick (Mary Ann) Egan, Tim (Debbie) Egan, Patti Russell, Shawn Egan, Billy Egan Jr., and Jennifer (John) Hart; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and sister, Phyllis Madden. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph and Malven Aumiller, and granddaughter, Vickie. A recitation of the Rosary was held Thursday, June 17, in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Friday, June 18, with a prayer service, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Interment was private. WILLIAM CASELTON

William Charles Caselton, 91, of Toledo, died June 11, 2010, at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He was born on August 23, 1918, to Myrtle and William Caselton in his maternal grandmother’s home in Woodville, Ohio. Mr. Caselton was a lifelong resident of Point Place. He graduated from Point Place High School in 1936. He joined the United Church of Christ in 1936, when it was known as Point Place Congregational Church. He remained a member of the church throughout his life. He married Anne Perry on March 26, 1938. They recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. Mr. Caselton took a position at Strong Electric in 1940. He retired in 1983 after 43 years of service and many contributions in the engineering department of the company. He was an active, contributing member of the Point Place community. He treasured the community’s unique shore side beauty and the close-knit feeling of its neighborhoods. As a youth, he learned to sail and fish, avocations that he pursued throughout his life and shared with family and friends. He was committed to promoting the pleasure and camaraderie of sailing and helped to build the Jolly Roger Sailing Club in 1946. He is survived by his wife, Anne; grandson, Chad Kelsey; nieces, Jacqueline (Clint) Page and Carolyn (Talbert) Spence; nephews, Stephen Caselton and Jerry (Sharon) Schultz. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Lindsey; sister, Ruth Schultz, and brother, Melvin Caselton. Funeral services were held Friday, June 18, at Point Place United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Candace Thomas officiating. Interment was in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Edwin M. “Keetsie” Durfey, 73, of north Toledo, died unexpectedly in his home on Wednesday, June 2, 2010. He was born in 1937, in Toledo, to McKinley and Nora (Shinivar) Durfey. He served his country while in the Army. He was a 1954 graduate of Woodward High School. Mr. Durfey belonged to the Moose Lodge #1579, Outing Unlimited, was a life member of North Toledo Arrow Club, F.O.E. Aerie 197, and the United States Bowling Congress. He enjoyed fishing for walleye and perch at Indian River and at Coldwater, Michigan. He is survived by his daughter, Cindy (William) Dudley; special friend, Nancie Durfey; grandchildren, Marty (Heidi) Durfey and Roxanne (Joshua) Mohn; great-grandchildren, Natalie, and twins, Allysen and Avah Mohn; daughter-inlaw, Leticia Durfey of Texas; sister, Velma Barbara, and brothers, Robert Durfey and Fred (Sue) Durfey. KARL GUTH

Karl E. Guth, 70, died Thursday, June 3, 2010, in his Point Place residence of 47 years. He was born in Toledo, to Orville and Mildred (Kreutzpeintner). He served his country in the United States Army. Mr. Guth worked for 30 years for G.M. Hydromatic, retiring in 1991. A NASCAR and racing enthusiast, he enjoyed spending time up north in the woods and spending time with his family. Mr. Guth is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Ellen (Kellermeier); sons, Jeffrey, John (Tammy), Mark (Connie), and Matthew (Rhiannon) Guth; grandchildren, Emily, Alyssa, Bobby, Samantha, and Sydney; brother, David; sisters, Sharon (Al) and Gloria (Jim). Barbara C. Henzler, 82, of north Toledo, died Sunday, May 30, 2010, while in Point Place Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Toledo, to Herbert and Ethel (Reed) Parks in 1928. She worked as a decorator for Libby Glass then chose to be a homemaker. She later worked as general help at Henzler Print Shop. She was a devoted fisherman and enjoyed spending time at a cottage at Marble Lake. Her travels were extensive throughout the United States. She also enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, and nature. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Fred Henzler; children, John (Theresa) Hissa and Diane Henzler; grandchildren, Yon, Heather and Tavis Hissa; nieces, Pat Lewis, Gloria Peart and Diane Thomas; nephews, Butch and Mike Brighton, Albert Navarre, Jr., Garry Navarre and Timothy Navarre. Catherine Yvonne (Campos) Sedlar, 54, died Sunday May 30, 2010, in St. Anne Mercy Hospital. She was born on March 21, 1956, in Oakland, California. She retired from the Kroger Company and then spent many years working for Advantage Tank Lines. She is survived by her daughter, Tiffany Sedlar; son, Christopher Sedlar; parents, Charles and Jean Campos; grandson, Caleb; Christopher and Tiffany’s father, James Sedlar; sisters, Pat (Steven) Snow, Denise Rothwell, Nancy (Robert) Villagomez, Betty Christianson and Jacqueline Whyte, and brother, Charles Campos. Shelly Sue Deiley- Iacoangeli, 57, of Toledo, died Monday, May 24, 2010. She was born in Point Place, to Emil and Beverly (Fitzgerald) Steiner. She began her career at the age of 14, working for Mary Warning Flowers. In 1989, she opened North Towne Florists, where she ran the day-to-day operations until her death. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, and spending time with her family and flower shop buddies. She is survived by her fiancé of 23 years, Jim Iacoangeli of Point Place; brother, Robert Steiner of Toledo; sister, Robin (Ron) Miller of Grand Rapids, Ohio; nephew, Robbie, and niece, Courtney. CAPTAIN MICHAEL ELSON
Captain Michael J. “Papa” Elson, 80, of the Point Place/Shoreland community, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born in Marinette, Wisconsin, to Joseph and Irene (Dorsey) Elson. He was the fleet captain of American Steamship Company for 45 years, retiring in 1994. He started as an ordinary seaman deckhand and completed his career as master of their many vessels. During this period, he spent four years on the M/V Belle River, presently the Walter J. McCarthy, a thousand foot bulk freighter. From 1977 until his retirement in 1994, he served as master of his vessels. He was a life member of the Elks and had enjoyed this membership for 54 years. He also was the recipient of the Outstanding Mariner award in 1985. Mr. Elson is survived by his children, Michael (Nancy) Elson and their children, Michael and Rachael, Gary (Lynn) Elson, Steve (Mary) Elson and their children, Sarah (Scott) Polzin, and Alex; Kathryn Powell and her children, Greggory, and Garrett (Nichole) Padgett; Marla (Jeff) Michael and their children, Melissa and Richie; Karen (John) Sliwinski and their children, Anna (Matthew) Kertesz and Mari (Brad) Doerfler; Bryon Elson and Bradley Elson; great-grandchildren, Gwendolynn, Gavin, Grayson, Griffin, Zoe, Gannon, Addelyn Mae, Emily, Elizabeth, Hannah, Canaan, Michael and Uriah; brother, Joseph (Ramona) Elson. Amelia “Emily” I. Przybysz, 91, longtime resident of the Point/Shoreland community and formerly of the Lagrange Street area, died Friday, May 21, 2010, in Point Place Care and Rehabilitation. She was born to Martin and Hedwig (Grechowski) Przybysz. She worked at the former Menke Bakery for 20 years and then at the Toledo Optical for another 20 years. She was a longtime member of St. Adalbert Catholic Church and the Polish Falcons. Ms. Przybysz is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. She enjoyed going to garage sales and thrift store shopping. Mary M. Lee, 68, of north Toledo, died Wednesday, May 5, 2010, in Heartland of Oregon. She was born in Cypress Inn, Tennessee to Grady and Jewel (Brewer) Bryan. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and Bible studies. She taught Sunday school, junior church and teen Bible classes over the years at RiverPoint Ministries. Hwa Jah “Lee” Rowland died April 25, 2010. She enjoyed cooking, and retired from Raceway Park as the track kitchen manager. She is survived by her husband, James Rowland of Point Place; children, Jean Rowland-Poplawski, James (Kelly) Rowland Jr., Thomas (Paula) Rowland, Anthony (Tonia) Rowland, Dean (Kelly) Rowland; 23 grandchildren, and 11 greatgrandchildren. A private service for immediate family was held Friday, April 30, to honor her wish that those who knew her would hold her in their fond memories. ANNA SICILIANO

Anna M. (Kott) Siciliano died April 29, 2010. She was born on March 27, 1911, to Lorenzo and Amelia (Picon) Manz. She married Frank Kott on November 11, 1933, and they had two children. He preceded her in death on February 23, 1958. She later married Albert Siciliano, who also preceded her in death. She worked for 42 years at the former Dana Corporation, retiring in 1971. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially the weekends at “The Cottage” along with her yearly vacations with her sisters and brothers-in-law. She also enjoyed enjoyed tending her flower garden. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Leister; son, Robert (Gloria) Kott; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and greatgreat- grandchildren, and brother, Vincent Manz. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, John and George Manz; sisters, Louise, Helen, Rose and Amelia, along with their spouses, and her special friend, James Stadler. Prayers began in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, on Monday, May 3, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Gerald Chmiel officiating. Shirley A. (Rose) Lafferty, 76, born May 20, 1933, died Friday, April 23, 2010. Raymond E. Amborski, 66, of Point Place, died Sunday, April 25, 2010, in his home. He was born in 1943, in Toledo, to Casimer and Henrietta (Michalak) Ambroski. He served in the United States Marines and worked for the former Toledo Coke Company as a laborer, retiring after 30 years. He belonged to several pigeon clubs; Elm Club, GTC, Maumee Pigeon Club and SFA Club. Mr. Amborski is survived by his wife of 37 years, Deborah (Kisseberth); sister, Bonnie (Ben) Cobb; brother, Vic Szymanski; many nieces and nephews, and Olivia and Luke, who held a special place in his heart. FRED LISK

Fred Lisk, 80, of Point Place, died Friday, April 23, 2010, at Point Place Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in 1930, to Fred and Mary (Korn) Lisk in Toledo. He graduated from Woodward High School in 1948. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Lisk worked as a glass cutter for Libbey-Owens-Ford, where he retired in 1988 after 33 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting for small game, golfing, planting his vegetable garden and maintaining the beauty of his yard. During the late 1960s, he coached Pee Wee and Colt baseball. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty; children, Bruce and Sandra Lisk, and grandchildren, Justin, Paige and Amber. He was preceded in death by his son, Fred, in 1974. JOSEPH SUCHOMMA

JR. Joseph “Joe” F. Suchomma Jr., 66, of Point Place, died Tuesday, April 20, 2010, while in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Hospital. He was born in 1944, in Toledo, to Joseph Sr. and Jane (Doran) Suchomma. He graduated from Woodward High School in 1962, and served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He worked for Jeep Corporation, where he became an inspector, then retired in 1999 after more than 37 years of service. Mr. Suchomma coached women’s softball for Tommy Clark’s Player’s Club and took the team to the nationals. He was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader and was known as the Girl Scout “Cookie Man.” He was the OhioReads Tutor at Ottawa River Elementary School and was known as a master gardener. He was a member of American Legion Post #646 in Holland, Ohio. He was an avid fan of Ohio State University, the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings. Mr. Suchomma is survived by his wife of 40 years, Irene (Jones) Suchomma; children, Aaron, Brett (Michelle), and granddaughters, Brianna, Kiersten and Brittney. He was preceded in death by his son, Jason, in 1971, and his parents. Funeral services were held Friday, April 23, in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Toledo, with Father Martin Donnelly officiating. Interment was in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. JOHN DENT JR.

John B. Dent Jr., 83, of Point Place, died Sunday, April 11, 2010, at the Franciscan Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio. He was born in 1926 to John Sr. and Amelia (Frett) Dent in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He belonged to Riverview Yacht Club, where he lived and worked in the boatyard. He was Associated Yacht Club treasurer, did yearbooks for the Club on his computer and ILYA. He also assisted with the race committee boat for the AYC regattas for more than 30 years. He is survived by his daughters, Terry (Thomas) Scott, and Rebecca Dent; grandchildren, Michael and Nicole, and three greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen, and daughter, Karen. Riverview Yacht Club and Blue Gavel services were held Wednesday, April 14, at the David R. Jasin- Hoening Funeral Home. FELIX LERUTH

Felix Leruth, 83, of Toledo, died Friday, April 9, 2010, at his home. He was born on December 25, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, to Frank and Helen (Vandenberghe) Leruth. He graduated from Napoleon High School in 1944, and served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was employed at the Willys- Overland plant while working his way through the University of Toledo, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1953. He married Clara Wielfaert of Riga, Michigan, in 1954. He had a successful career as a civil engineer that included the founding of his own structural design firm, Leruth and Associates, in 1975. He was named Toledo Engineer of the Year in 1988, and was a past president of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers and the Engineers Foundation of Ohio. His firm’s structural design for the administration building at the Davis Besse Nuclear Power Station was selected as one of the 10 outstanding engineering achievements in the nation in 1982. He enjoyed dancing with his wife, spending time with his grandchildren, having lunch at Spengler’s Café in his hometown of Napoleon, and long distance running, competing in the Columbus Marathon. Mr. Leruth is survived by his wife of 56 years, Clara; children, Maria (Steve) Jadwisiak, of Perrysburg, and Michael (Angela) Leruth, of Williamsburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Senior Airman Christopher Jadwisiak of Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, Caitlin Jadwisiak, Sophie and Alice Leruth, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Yvonne Hoops and brother, Camil Leruth. Funeral services began Wednesday, April 14, with a prayer service at the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, conducted by Fr. Gerald Chmiel. Interment was in Deerfield, Michigan. Jefferson C. Bailey, 56, died Sunday, April 4, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana. He was born July 29, 1953. Mr. Bailey was a counselor at the Family and Children’s Center, a vendor at the farmer’s market, and enjoyed working in his flower gardens. He is survived by his stepdaughter, Greta Lee, of South Bend; four grandchildren; one sister and one brother. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, in 2004. Melissa Thompson, 59, of Toledo, died unexpectedly in her home, Saturday, April 3, 2010. She was born in Toledo, to William and Frances (Wintringham) Bond in 1950. She worked as an office manager for the past five years at Air Ride Trucking Company. Prior to that, she was a property manager for 10 years and she was a waitress for five years at the Commodore Perry Hotel. She enjoyed rug hooking, gardening and watching her pet ferret play with her cat. Carol M. Anaple Turner, 34, of Toledo, died Friday, March 19, 2010, in her home. She was born in Toledo, to Timothy and Edna Anaple. She was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and studied at Davis College and later Lourdes College, becoming a medical secretary and working in several medical offices including X-Ray Associates. Recently she was employed as a teacher’s aide for Westside Montessori and was a part-time babysitter. In her leisure time, she enjoyed scrapbooking and volunteering at Little Flower School where her daughter, Megan, is enrolled. THOMAS COYLE JR.

Thomas E. Coyle Jr., died Friday, March 5, 2010. He was born in 1950, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Thomas Edward Coyle and Bernice (Martindale) Coyle. He was a safety supervisor for 20 years in a AtoChem North America, and he owned Video Showcase, retiring in 1990. His interests included HAM radio, chasing tornados, building model planes and singing Gospel, music from the ’50s and in barbershop quartets. He enjoyed the NASCAR races and was a open wheel enthusiast and mechanic. He also enjoyed computer technology and fishing. Mr. Coyle is survived by his significant other, Bobbi Kohn; son, Brian (Darcie) Coyle; granddaughter, Emily Coyle, extended family; Scott (Ginnean) Kohn, Randy (Trish) Kohn, Carey and Bill Baker, “honorary” grandchildren; Lennon, Allison, Andrew, Joshua, Holly and Savannah, and special friends, Connie Steck and Lana and Frank Scharer. KARL KELLY
Karl Kelly, 84, son of Karl and Mary Elizabeth Kelly, originally of Cape Brenton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, died March 6, 2010. A graduate of Scott High School, Mr. Kelly entered the U.S. Navy, serving four years in combat zones throughout the south Pacific during World War II. After the war, he returned to Toledo. He retired from Dana Corp. and enjoyed a second career at the University of Toledo, School of Engineering. A “Jack of all trades,” Mr. Kelly volunteered his time for numerous projects, including the Christ the King Catholic School building. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Jane; children, Randy, Jill and Christopher; grandson, Joseph (Valerie) McNamara, and brother, James (Beverly) Kelly. MARY RAY

Mary E. Ray, 89, died Saturday, March 6, 2010. She was born in 1921, to Alex and Pearl (Sabo) Pocs in Helena, Ohio. Her parents were Hungarian immigrants, and she grew up on a farm with nine other siblings. She moved to Toledo, married Harold Ray, and they raised four children. She felt a compassion and love for animals which resulted in her becoming the caretaker of many strays throughout her life. She worked in various places, including Tiedtke’s Department Store, where she stayed until it closed. Ms. Ray is survived by her sons, Ron (Darlene) Ray and Hal (Pat) Ray; daughter, Deb (Don) Whiting; daughter-in-law, Betty Ray; grandchildren Marla, Tammy, Jennifer, David, Nancy, Cindy, Nick, Frank, Chris, and special grandson, Bryon; 20 great-grandchildren, including Mya and Anna, and sisters, Julia Nixon and Irene House. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; son, Fred; sisters, Pearl, Betty and Rose, and brothers, Joe, Alex and John. Visitation was held Tuesday, March 9, at the David R. John L. Thatcher, 56, of Toledo, died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 4, 2010. The youngest of six children, he was born in 1953, in Toledo, to Dale and Alice Mae (Rueve) Thatcher. GEORGE LOWDERMILK

George D. Lowdermilk Sr., 81, of the Point Place/Shoreland community, died Thursday, February 25, 2010, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Perrysburg Center. He was born in 1928, to Gilbert and Bessie (Casteel) Lowdermilk, in Oakland, Maryland. He served in the United States Army in the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment during World War II, and in the 187th Regimental Combat Team during the Korean War. After the war, he became a truck driver for Roadway Express and worked there for 27 years, retiring in 1993. Mr. Lowdermilk is survived by his wife of 56 years, Juanita (Bowser); sons, George Jr. (Nancy), Gerald (Trisha), and Troy Lowdermilk; grandchildren, Gerald Lowdermilk, Alexei Resoff and Gwyneth Lowdermilk; brothers and sisters, Mabel Fulk, Joann Hershman, Harold and Robert Lowdermilk. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Thelma Kisner, Mary Kemphfer, Charles Lowdermilk, Gladys Lowdermilk and Dale Lowdermilk. There was no visitation, and all services were private. Starr Angela Varner, 65, died Sunday, February 28, 2010, in Dade City, Florida. She was one of eight children born to Homer and Nola “Mae” Mullins. PAUL BALDUF SR.
Paul Balduf Sr., 64, died February 9, 2010, in Dothan Alabama. He was born in 1946, in Toledo, to Clayton and Corinne Balduf. He grew up in Point Place and graduated from Woodward High School in 1964. He served his country during two tours in Vietnam. Mr. Balduf enjoyed fishing and dancing and was active with his local VFW. He is survived by his wife, Anne; children Yvonne (Dr. Bruce) McClenathan and Paul (Monica) Balduf Jr.; grandchildren, Michael, Brandon and Sarah; sisters, Marilyn (Bob) Adams of Houston, Texas, and Pat (Mike) Kehr of Toledo; nieces, Mikki Adams, Kathy Webb and Sonja Kehr, and the mother of his children, Lucille Desser. NANCY LOAR
Nancy A. (Oehlers) Loar, 74, of north Toledo, died Wednesday, February 10, 2010. She was born in 1935, in Toledo, to Erwin and Josephine (Magnatta) Oehlers. She worked as an inspector for Doehler-Jarvis for 15 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church and the UAW Local 1058. She was an avid fan of The Ohio State University football team, and enjoyed playing bingo and card games. She is survived by her children, Gary (Elizabeth) Raitz, Jo Ann Raitz, and Larry (Robin) Raitz; grandchildren, Eddie, Jennifer, Tony, and Stephanie; greatgranddaughter, Alyse, and brother, Richard (Becky) Oehlers. She was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Bryce. The family will hold a Memorial Mass on Saturday, March 6, at 11 a.m., at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 420 Sandusky Street, Toledo, with Father Gerald Chmiel officiating. LLOYD SHANK
Lloyd A. Shank, 90, of Erie Township, Michigan, died Thursday, February 11, 2010, in his home. He was born June 20, 1919, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to Harry and Ruth Shank. He worked as a die welder for more than 50 years and at Power Train for 30 years, retiring in 1999 at the age of 80. He served during World War II in the United States Navy. Mr. Shank is survived by his wife of 56 years, Catherine (Zych) Shank; daughter, Debra (Pat) Sugrue; grandchildren, Patrick, Vanessa and Megan, many nieces and nephews, and special neighbors, Tim, Julie and children. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ella Mae Bates, and brother, David Shank. A graveside service was held Monday, February 15, at 10 a.m., in Erie Union Cemetery, Erie, Michigan, with the Rev. David Rushton officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to an organization of the donor’s choice.


SYLVIA CLOSE
Sylvia J. Close, 72, of the Point/Shoreland Community, died Saturday, February 6, 2010, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo. She was born in Keyser, West Virginia, to Harry and Hazel (Clark) Sollars. She enjoying attending all her grandchildren’s sports and other activities. She is survived by her children, Monica (Greg) Close, Mark (Sharyl) Close; grandchildren, Alexis, Chad, Asia, Christopher, Caisy, Joshua and Jacob; siblings, Louise Woods, Ruth Cale, Hazel Rush, Robert and James Sollars; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and greatnephews and special friend, Shirley Lewis. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William, in 2008, and several brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 11, in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jimmy Sollars Sr. officiating. Interment was in Toledo Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

FLORENCE JOHNSON

Florence J. (Rahilly) Johnson, 89 of the Point Place/Shoreland Community, died Tuesday, January 26, 2010, in the Mercy St. Vincent Palliative Care Center. Born June 30, 1920, Mrs. Johnson lived in the Point Place/Shoreland Community her entire life. She was the daughter of James and Grace Rahilly. She graduated from the University of Toledo with honors, was a member of the Theta Psi (AOPi) and taught geography and English for many years at Shoreland Elementary. At Washington Junior High School, she helped students diagram sentences and write term papers for a total of 19 years. After the birth of her children, she and Janet Brewington began a preschool at RiverPoint Ministries United Methodist Church and taught the little ones there for 17 years. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States as well as her trips to Germany and Ireland in 2000. Her family cottage on Lime Lake, New Hudson, Michigan, was another of her favorite places to be with her family and friends anytime of the year. Her two sisters and she enjoyed trips to the opera in Cleveland, Ohio. She lunched often with the “Point Place Girls.” She attended all of her high school reunions, the last being her 71st. She was a member of Point Place United Church of Christ for more than 50 years, where she taught Sunday school, helped with confirmation classes, served on many committees and sang in the choir. Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband, Maynard; daughter, Kimberly (grandsons, Colin and Conor), and son, Todd; sister, Bonnie (John) Chilcote; nephews, Brett (Kara) Cunningham, Scott and Jay Johnson; nieces, Ayn Mazzeo, Kristin and Kate Johnson, and special greatnephew, John Strobel; extended family members, Chuck (Leslie) Geletzke, Abby, Chip, and Travis (Jennifer), Donna and Terry Serviss. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth. Funeral Services were held Saturday, January 30, at Point Place United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Candy Thomas officiating. Interment was in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home. CHARLES “POPPY” BOGDANSKI
Charles R. “Poppy” Bogdanski, 78, of Toledo, died January 15, 2010, in St. Charles Hospital, Oregon, Ohio. He was born January 8, 1932, in Toledo, to Frank and Helen (Gralak) Bogdanski. A graduate of Woodward High School, Mr. Bogdanski served in the U.S. Army. He was a paper cutter for Commerce Paper Company for 36 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the American Legion Pond Post and enjoyed fishing and gardening. He is survived by his children, Michael (Darla) Blanton, Brian (Stacie) Blanton, June (Wade) Love, Lisa (Robert) Brown and Scott (Tonya) Parker; 17 grandchildren; 18 greatgrandchildren; sisters, Marty Rygalski and Patricia Snyder, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Wande Parker; sister, Ruth Holt, and brothers, Walter, Paul and Frank Bogdanski. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 20, in the Urbanski Funeral Home Lagrange Street, with the Rev. Clayton Stone officiating. Interment was in Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Toledo.

BRYAN MERRITT
Bryan Lucas Merritt, 39, of Toledo, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. He worked as a carpenter, for several different companies, for more than 15 years. He enjoyed football especially the Steelers and Ohio State, DJ’ing for special events and spending time with his family. Mr. Merritt is survived by his children, Sarah, Kellan, Dominic, Alexia and Tanylei; mother, Toni Gillespie; father, Ronald (Jackie) Merritt; biological father, Michael Prebe; grandmother, Betty Brown; sisters, April (Kevin) Neff, Valerie, Malissa and Molly Prebe, and brother, Brandon Flatt. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Rolald and Edith Gillespie. Memorial services were held Sunday, January 17, in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home. Interment was private. PAULINE RASZKA
Pauline Marion Raszka, 96, died Friday, January 1, 2010. She was born April 6, 1913, in Toledo, to C.B. and Luella (Graetz) Rockwell. She moved to Upland, California, in 1949, to marry Stephen Raszka, where they resided for 56 years until his death 2006. She worked many years for Kaiser Steel Company until her retirement. She enjoyed sewing and many kinds of hand crafts. She also enjoyed working in her garden all year round and growing many varieties of geraniums. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mae Jo Ritchie; grandchildren, Craig (Angela) Ritchie of Cameron, California, and Marcia (Thomas) Yoder of Holland, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Samantha Calmes, Sydney Calmes, Thomas Yoder, Emma Yoder, Jordan Ritchie, Lorynne Ritchie, Colin Ritchie, and Keelan Ritchie; sister, Dorothy Ganor of Amarillo, Texas, and brothers-in-law, Isadore Raszka and Donald (Gerry) Raszka. A graveside service was held Monday, January 18, at Toledo Memorial Park, with the Rev. Karen Shepler officiating. PAUL HOLEWINSKI

Paul E. Holewinski, 85, long time Point Place resident, died Sunday, January 10, 2010, in the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, Ohio, where he had lived for the past couple of years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, a longtime member of Bayview Yacht Club, an avid fisherman, an Honorary 4th degree Knights of Columbus, a member of Sub Veterans of World War II, and a Lifetime Kentucky Colonial. He is survived by his daughters, Marcia (Greg) Mayer and Jackie Holewinski; grandsons, Paul (Leslie) Simon and Brandy (Jennifer) Simon; greatgrandchildren, Brandon, Allison and Olivia; special sister-in-law, Virginia; brother-in-law, Chet (Marie) and sister-in-law, Alice, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jacqueline (Rutkowski), in 2000, and brothers, Don and Jim. Funeral services began Thursday, January 14, with a prayer service in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Interment was in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. JOZEPH HORVATH
Jozeph M. “Joe” Horvath, 71, of the Point/Shoreland Community, died Thursday, January 7, 2010, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg Center. He was born in Marcalto, Hungary, in 1938, to Jozeph and Gizella (Takacs) Horvath. He served in the United States Army. He was a tool and die maker for Ronfelt Assoc., Champion Spark Plug and Dura, retiring in 2000. Mr. Horvath is survived by his wife of 39 years, Amailia (Kurunczy); daughters, Elizabeth (Albert) Sukei and Suzana Horvath; two brothers and four sisters. A Memorial Service was held Wednesday, January 13, at the David R. Jasin- Hoening Funeral Home, with Father Joseph Vamos officiating. A Memorial Mass was held Friday, January 15, at Holy Cross Hungarian Catholic Church, Detroit, Michigan, with Father Barnabas Kiss officiating. ROSEMARY DUNN

Rosemary Dunn, 90, of Point Place, died Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Lawrence and Rose (Blaty) Heisserer. She moved to the Toledo area in 1935. She worked as a switchboard operator and receptionist for WTVG for 30 years, retiring in 1992. She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. She enjoyed traveling with her family, visiting all of the Canadian provinces as well as every state in the United States, except for Hawaii. She also enjoyed reading and meeting with her monthly lunch group from St. Michael’s. Ms. Dunn is survived by her children, Marilyn Keip, William (Connie) Dunn; grandchildren, Brian Hansen, Scott Hansen, Kristin (Nick) Morris, John Keip, Michelle Keip and Averil (Steve) Burpee; sister, Jeanette (Phil) Taylor, and son-in-law, Craig Hansen. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1976; daughter, Kathleen Hansen; brother, Lawrence Heisserer; sister, Catherine, and son-in-law, John Keip. Funeral services began Saturday, January 9, in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, with Fr. Gerald Chmiel officiating. VIRGINIA RAMER
Virginia R. Ramer, 85, formerly of Point Place, died Thursday, December 31, 2009. She was born in Toledo, in 1924, to John and Cecile (Pawlowski) Snyder. She worked for the Toledo Board of Education as a Secretary for more than 32 years, retiring in 1978. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robert Ramer; daughter, Marcia (Roy) Armes; son-in-law, Bruce Hahn; sister, Patricia (Kenneth) Ramer, and grandsons, Justin and Nicholas Armes. Mrs. Ramer was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa Hahn. A Scripture Service was held Monday, January 4, at the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, January 5, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Gerald Chmiel officiating. Interment was in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Beverly J. Ryan, 72, of north Toledo, died Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. She was born in 1937, to William and Elda (Bomer) Curtis, in Toledo. She enjoyed playing bingo and watching movies. Mrs. Ryan is survived by her husband of 54 years, James Ryan; children, James (Cindy) Ryan, Denise (Bill) Adams, Sandra (John) Prellar, Jeff and Richard Ryan; 12 grandchildren; sister, Bonnie (James) Stacey, and brother, Clayton Curtis. She was preceded in death by her brother, William Curtis, and sister, Elsie Cravens. Visitation was held Tuesday, January 5, at the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home. Graveside services were private.


BILLIE JEAN SPELLIS
Billie Jean May Spellis, 85, formerly of the Point Place/Shoreland Community died Monday, December 21, 2009, in Northwood, Ohio. She was born in Toledo, in 1924, to Samuel and Lillian (Gibberson) Wright. She is survived by nieces and nephews and her special friend, Karen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore, and son, Ted Jr. There was no visitation, and graveside services were private. Arrangements were made by the David R. Jasin- Hoening Funeral Home.


JOSEPH SPENCLEY, SR.
Joseph T. Spencley, Sr., 79, of the Point Shoreland Community, died on Monday, December 21, 2009. He worked as a systems analyst and data processor manager for Periodical Publishers Clearing House for many years retiring in 1991. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Spencley is survived by his wife of 55 years, Aileen (Powers) Spencley; son, Joseph (Lynn) Spencley, Jr.; daughter, Karen (Al) Albright; grandchildren, Lauren, Lisa and Eric Spencley, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers; William, John and Kenneth Spencley. The family will receive visitors in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, 5300 North Summit Street, on Monday, January 4, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m., following the visitation in the funeral home. PATRICIA STACY
Patricia A. Stacy, long time resident of Point Place, died on Saturday, December 26, 2009, in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, at the age of 73. She worked as a senior clerk for the Toledo Lucas County Library for more than 37 years, retiring in 1989. She also was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the Point Place Heritage Society and Friends of the Library. She enjoyed played bingo and fishing. Survivors are siblings, Helen Neikirk, James (Karin), Richard (Ruth), Michael (Tina) and Cheryl Stacy. Many nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her sister, Gladys Falbo. Funeral services were held in the David R. Jasin- Hoening Funeral Home on December 30, with the Rev. David Rushton officiating. Interment was private. Memorial contributions may be made to either Messiah Lutheran Church or The Toledo Sight Center.

MARSHA ELSON
Marsha Mae Elson, 70, long time resident of the Point/Shoreland community, died Sunday, December 27, 2009 in Hospice of Northwest Ohio-Perrysburg. She did much volunteering at both St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and School over the years. She attended St. Michael the Archangel School and then Woodward High School. She had worked in various office positions until the 70s. She retired early to travel with her husband, who was a ship captain. Survivors are her husband of 45 years, Captain Michael Elson; daughter, Kathryn (Stephen) Powell and their children, Greggory Padgett and Garrett (Nichole) Padgett; daughter, Karen (John) Sliwinski and their children; Anna (Matthew) Kertesz and Mari (Brad) Doerfler; greatgrandchildren, Gwendolynn, Gavin, Grayson, Griffin, Zoe and Gannon; step-children, Michael, Gary, Steven, Marla, Bryon and Bradley Elson, and special friend, Sharon Rudess. A Funeral Mass was held on December 30, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Fr. Gerald Chmiel officiating. Interment was private. Arrangements were handled by David R.
